Coates headlines five Dutch athletes on conference weekly honors

PELLA—Grace Coates (junior, Marion) was selected as the American Rivers Conference’s Female Athlete of the week in addition to being the women’s soccer Offensive Player of the week Monday afternoon.

Joining Coates on the list were four other Dutch student-athletes. Mackenzie Biggs (senior, Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) was the Women’s Golfer of the Week, Caroline McMartin (senior, Pella) was the Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, Colleen Kenney (sophomore, Taylor Ridge, Ill., Rock Island Alleman HS) was the volleyball Defensive Player of the Week and Alejo Marcon (sophomore, Taylor Ridge, Ill., Rock Island Alleman HS) was the men’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Central had the most honorees of any school in the league this week.

Coates scored four goals in a 1-0-1 week for the Dutch after recording a hat trick in a 5-0 win over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) Wednesday. She added a fourth goal in a 2-2 draw with North Park University on Saturday. She leads the league in points (13), goals (6), shots on goal (14) and total shots (20).

Central travels to Augustana College (Ill.) Wednesday for a 6 p.m. match.

Biggs finished second at the Siouxland Fall Invitational with a score of 77-74—151, two shots away from the winner. Central took second as a team in a field of 15 squads.

Central travels to Illinois Wesleyan Invitational for a two-day tournament Saturday, September 16 and 17.

McMartin earned the Runner of the Week award for the fifth team in her career. She won the Les Duke Invitational in a time of 22 minutes, 21.67 seconds in a 102-runner field. Central also won the team title for the second competition in a row.

The Dutch return to action Friday, September 22 at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.

Marcon helped Central go to 2-0-1 last week, playing all but six minutes. He was a part of a defensive unit that allowed just one goal in three games. He had the game-winning goal in the first half of Sunday’s road win at Augustana (Ill.) College.

The Dutch men’s soccer team returns to the field on Saturday, September 16 for Senior Day in Pella against Dordt University at 3:30 p.m.

Kenney averaged nearly five digs per set for a Dutch squad that went 5-0 on the week, including four wins at the Raleigh Invitational. She recorded 64 digs, 12 assists and four service aces during the North Carolina trip.

The Dutch play three matches at the Loras Invitational this weekend, starting with a 5 p.m. match Friday against St. Olaf College (Minn.)
