On Golden Pond

OSKALOOSA, IA — The Tony Award-winning stage play On Golden Pond is at the George Daily Auditorium on Monday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. The movie version starring Henry and Jane Fonda and Katherine Hepburn, based on the stage play, won five Academy Awards for its story and acting.

On Golden Pond is an American treasure. This tale of a single family and how they pull apart and find each other has been touching audiences for generations. Aging couple Ethel and Norman Thayer spend each summer at their home on a lake called Golden Pond, exploring their turbulent relationship with their daughter and the difficulties faced by a couple in the twilight years of their long marriage.

This play has endured because it deals with a family in crisis in a humane, poetic, and often funny way. It continues to resonate because we all have mothers and fathers, we all cope with aging, and we have all experienced being lost – and hopefully found. It is this dynamic of finding family and the love therein that keeps On Golden Pond forever relevant.

The show is performed by the Montana Repertory Theatre based out of Missoula, Montana. The George Daily Auditorium has presented several shows from Montana Rep throughout the years, including Barefoot in the Park, To Kill A Mockingbird, Biloxi Blues, Lost in Yonkers, and Of Mice and Men.

There will be an optional post-show Q&A where audience members will be able to talk to the cast.

While the performers are from Montana, most of the crew are local volunteers. They will work on carpentry, lights, sound, rigging, and more to help set up the show – and some of the crew will be students from Oskaloosa High School and William Penn University.

“In small towns it’s such a unique opportunity to be able to work with professional crews for these productions,” said Andy McGuire, Education Director. “We say it all the time that these are the same productions you can see in all the big cities, but it never ceases to amaze me that it’s true and these high schoolers can work with people who travel the country or even the world doing this professionally.”

On Golden Pond will be at the George Daily Auditorium on Monday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m.! Tickets cost $25 for adults and $10 for students, and are available by calling (641) 672-0799, online at www.georgedaily.org, or at the George Daily Auditorium box office. This performance is sponsored by Clow Valve Company. This presentation is supported by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Iowa Arts Council and the Crane Group.
