Cherol Diane Brown
April 17, 1946 – November 19, 2022
Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 76

Cherol Brown, 76, of Oskaloosa, passed away on November 19, 2022, at the University of Iowa hospital in Iowa City. She has been cremated, as was her wish. Cherol Diane Brown, daughter of Glen Lavern and Jean (Brubaker) DeGeest, was born on April 17, 1946, in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Cherol attended Oskaloosa High School and graduated with the class of 1964. After high school, Cherol attended Northeast Missouri State University, transferred to William Penn University, and ended her education at the University of Connecticut. She received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1976. She received her Master’s degree in Special Education at the University of Iowa in 2000.

Cherol married William Paradis in 1966 and divorced in 1977. She then married Daryl Brown in Cody, Wyoming, in 1980.

Her most excellent source of joy was her pursuit of higher education and the knowledge she attained from the many jobs she held unrelated to teaching. She was a Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha NU Chapter member for many years. After many different jobs through the years, she taught special education at Tri-County School in Thornburg, IA, from 1997 – 2014 before she retired. She was a lifelong learner and passionate about completing a New York Times crossword puzzle daily. Her favorite flowers were: lilies of the valley, violets, and furry four-legged ones. Perhaps the best way to understand who Cherol was, is to listen to the poetic lyrics of songs written and performed by Bob Dylan, who helped give her the wisdom to live in this constantly evolving world.

Cherol is survived by her husband Daryl, a daughter Dawn (& Mike) Janos of Preston, CT; two grandchildren, Sean and Grace; three brothers, Mark (& Joyce) DeGeest of Oskaloosa, Randy (& Cristine) DeGeest of Oskaloosa and Leo Greg (& Linda) of Taos, NM.

Cherol was preceded in death by her parents.

Cherol’s life will be celebrated in the warmth of Spring 2023. Her place of memory will be Bellefontaine Cemetery near Tracy, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to Mahaska County Homelessness Coalition or Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
