Charles Oswandel, 74, of University Park died Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at Mahaska Health Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Charles was born April 11, 1945, in Oskaloosa, the son of Dwight and Mary Davis Oswandel.

Charles graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1964. He was a very talented football player during his school years. Charles helped his dad on the farm during his childhood and throughout high school.

On June 2, 1967, Charles was united in marriage to Janice Nelson at St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa. To this union they were blessed with daughters, Leann and Dawn.

Following high school, Charles worked at CLOW until he was diagnosed with Polio. That was a difficult time, he had to learn to eat, walk, and talk again. To which he succeeded. He worked for Ideal Manufacturing for 12 years. In 1977, he began work at Pella Rolscreen (now Pella Corporation) and after 30 years there he retired in 2007.

Charles enjoyed traveling, hunting-especially pheasant, quail, and duck, fishing, woodworking, caring for his garden and yard. As his Parkinson’s became more severe, he found new joy in feeding and watching the song birds from his living room. He and Jan cared for Jan’s parents as their health failed. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. His favorite thing to do was to camp and fish with his family and friends. They spent over 40 years enjoying camping.

His family includes his wife of over 52 years, Janice Oswandel of University Park; two daughters and their husbands: Leann (& Doug) Hasselman of Oskaloosa and Dawn (& Justin) Adams of Oskaloosa; five grandchildren: Tyler (& Kailey Sherwood) Hasselman, Katelyn (& Matt Clark) Hasselman, Kylei (& Shannon Hansel) Adams, Hailey Adams, and Emma Adams; two great grandchildren: Lydia Hasselman and Tanner Hansel; a sister, Lynda Van Gent of Moberly, Missouri; sisters and brothers-in-law: Betty (& Keith) McWilliams of Oskaloosa, Mary (& Bob) Van Weelden of New Sharon; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers-in-law, David Van Gent and Greg Mc Vey.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 16, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend Molly Goodrich officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Sunday, September 15, 2019 beginning after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House.
