Central’s Schulenberg, Strajack win conference honors
PELLA—Central College sophomore pitcher Mallory Schulenberg (Kansas City, Mo., St. Pius X HS) is the Iowa Conference female athlete of the week while sophomore second baseman Abbey Strajack (Davenport, Assumption HS) is the league’s softball position player of the week.
Schulenberg posted a 3-0 mark with a 0.32 earned run average in four appearances and three starts last week at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games. She yielded just one run in 21.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and two walks, including one intentional walk, while striking out 12 batters. Schulenberg notched her fifth career shutout in a 4-0 win against Texas Lutheran.
Strajack hit .514 with two doubles, a triple and seven runs batted in in 10 games at Arizona. She also had nine stolen bases in 10 attempts and a .629 slugging percentage while posting a .931 fielding percentage. Strajack is batting a team-high .472 and leads the conference with 10 stolen bases.
A first-team all-league pick last year, Strajack also earned third-team All-America distinction and first-team All-Midwest Region recognition. It’s the second time Strajack has been named the league position player of the week.
Central is 11-5 overall and returns to action Saturday with non-conference games against Washington-St. Louis University (Mo.) and Augustana College (Ill.) at the Washington University/Mizuno Invitational in St. Louis, Mo.
