Central’s Schilling, Hartley pick up regional singles victories

SAINT PETER, MINN. — The Central College women’s tennis team wrapped up its appearance at the USTA/ITA Division III Midwest Regional with a few doubles consolations matches on Saturday.

Sophomores Bronwyn Metcalf (Pella) and Maddie Hartley (Clarinda) notched a victory in the first round of consolation by an 8-4 margin against a team from St. Norbert College (Wis.). A duo from the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) blanked them 8-0 in the second match.

Laurynn Mize (junior, Sycamore, Ill.) and Karleigh Schilling (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids, Prairie HS) received a bye in the consolation bracket’s first round and then were dealt an 8-4 loss to a twosome from St. Olaf College (Minn.)

“Both teams are starting to gel a little more,” assistant coach Trevor Budewitz. “When they looked for opportunities to attack they were able to play some great points. I saw both teams with stretches of play at a high level. We need to find that higher level of play more often and we will be able to go deeper in tournaments like this.”

The Dutch will host Nebraska Wesleyan University at 10:30 a.m. and Buena Vista University at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in a pair of American Conference matches.
