Central’s offense struggles in women’s soccer loss

CEDAR RAPIDS — Despite outshooting its opponents 11-3, the Central College women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 match at Coe College Wednesday night.

The Dutch (8-6-1, 2-4-0 American Rivers Conference) could not find the back of the net against the Kohawks (3-11-1, 2-4-0 conference) despite attempting eight more shots. The Kohawks only had one shot on frame but converted it for a goal.

“Anytime that’s the stat line, you should probably be on the front foot,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “But soccer is a weird game. We had one defensive lapse and they capitalized and we didn’t capitalize on our offensive opportunities and that’s the name of the game,”

Central put five shots on frame.

“We missed a couple in front of the goal that normally we’d put away,” Kobylinki said. “Our effort was fine today. It was a lack of execution and decision-making.”

Midfielder Emma Rodman (freshman, Mount Vernon) and forward Grace Coates (freshman, Marion) each had two shots.

Jasmyn Bush (sophomore, La Porte City, Union HS) took the loss in goal.

Central returns home Saturday for a noon match against the University of Dubuque. The Dutch will honor the program’s lone senior, defender Sydney Canney (Adel, ADM HS) in a pre-game ceremony.

“We’ll try to regroup and be back at it for Dubuque,” Kobylinski said.
