Central women’s tennis team stumbles against Coe

Central College

PELLA —The Central College women’s tennis team was swept 9-0 by Coe College Wednesday. The team drops its five-game winning streak and gains its second loss in Iowa Conference play.

“Coe (6-1) is the best team in the league,” said coach Steve Tyler. “We really battled and were competitive in all three doubles. It was just a few missed overheads and volleys here and there.”

At No. 1 doubles Angie Allgood (freshman, Muscatine) and Megan Davis (freshman, Denver, Colo., Valley Christian HS) fell 8-3 and No. 2 doubles team Anna Bowser (freshman, Fort Dodge) and Anna Striegel (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS) dropped their match 8-2. At No. 3 Amanda Kuhn (freshman, Glen Ellyn, Ill., Glenbard South HS) and Ashlyn Huegel (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) lost 8-5.

On the singles side, No. 1 Allgood battled and lost 6-2, 6-2.

“Angie played the league champ, Michelle Schubpach, tonight and showed that she can play with anyone,” said Tyler. “She really made Michelle work for that win.”

Davis stumbled at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 loss. Senior Chelsea Johnson (Mount Vernon) was defeated 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 while No. 4 Striegel lost 6-3, 6-2. Kuhn fell at No. 5, 7-5, 6-3. Rounding out the singles at No. 6 was Bowser with a tough tiebreaker loss, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 10-5.

“This is far and away the best we have played in ten years,” Tyler said. “I’m very proud of the way we showed up. The future is bright for Dutch tennis.”

Central (8-2) takes on Wartburg College (5-3) and Luther College (7-1) Saturday in the next conference match-ups. The Dutch travel to Waverly and play the Knights at 9 a.m. Later Central plays Luther at 3 p.m. in Decorah.
