Central women’s relay record falls at Drake

Central College

DES MOINES—It was a busy but productive day at the Drake Relays for the Central College women’s track and field team Friday.

Rachel Purdy (sophomore, Ankeny), EmilyTeas (senior, Indianola), Felicia Coleman (sophomore, Houston, Texas, J. Frank Dobie HS) and Jill Ziskovsky (senior, Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) competed in three relays and came away with a new record and a berth in Saturday’s finals.

The foursome topped the school record of 1:42.83 set a year ago in the 4×200-meter relay. The Dutch were first in their section in 1:41.30 and posted the third-fastest time of the 26 teams competing in four sections.

“It was really fun to watch them run,” coach Joe Dunham said.

Central also gained a spot in Saturday afternoon’s 4×400-meter finals. Central was second in its heat as Ziskovsky, Teas, Purdy and Coleman finished in 3:50.21, narrowly missing the school record of 3:50.16 set April 16, also on the Drake track. The unit had the fifth-fastest time overall Friday.

Purdy, Teas, Coleman and Ziskovsky were also second in their heat of the 4×100-meter relay in 48.92 seconds, but failed to advance.

In Central’s only other women’s event Friday, Sara Crippen (senior, Williamsburg), Amanda Lamb (sophomore, Fairfield), Eve Reinhold (senior, Collins, Collins-Maxwell HS) and Molly Von Holten (senior, Walnut, Ill., Bureau Valley HS) were 16th in the distance medley relay (12:42.43).

Men gain 4×100 berth—The Central men also advanced to Saturday’s action, qualifying in the 4×100-meter relay. The foursome of Trevor Veach (junior, Grinnell), Logan Danko (sophomore, Centerville), Kyle Wood (junior, Newton) and Allen Scovel (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) placed second in its heat and was sixth-fastest overall in 41.61 seconds.

“The guys ran great,” Dunham said. “We can still run faster. We just need to put our handoffs together. We haven’t really done that yet this year.”

But the Dutch didn’t qualify in the 4×400. Ben Schornack (sophomore, Urbandale), Scovel, Veach and Wood placed fifth in their heat in 3:20.46. Central was 16th in the 4×800 as Kenny Kemp (junior, Waterloo, West HS), Austin O’Brien (freshman, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS), Andrew Hamer (junior, Murray) and Schornack finished in 7:55.32.

Matt Graber (senior, Newton) competed in the elite University-College Division of the shot put and finished 10th at 51 feet.

Kip Janvrin Open–The remainder of the Central men’s and women’s squads were competing at the Kip Janvrin Open at Indianola Friday. The meet wasn’t slated to be completed until late Friday night.
