Central tennis teams, 14 players win academic awards

PELLA— Central College’s men’s and women’s tennis teams have once again landed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award.

Additionally, 14 student-athletes captured ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition.

The men’s squad compiled a 3.34 combined team grade point average (4.0 scale) and posted a 10-15 overall record. The Dutch women tallied a 3.50 GPA and had an 11-8 mark. The men were third in the Iowa Conference while the women took fourth.

To receive the team distinction, a squad’s combined GPA must be a 3.2 or above.

Six men and eight women were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. To qualify for the individual honor, student-athletes must be a varsity letterwinner, have attended the institution at least two semesters and achieve a 3.5 or higher GPA for the academic year.

Alex Anderson (Boone), a May 2017 graduate, and Tom Palmer (senior, Pella) landed the individual honor for the third time. Sophomores Josh Phillips (Morton, Ill.) and Jackson Lewton (Ankeny, Centennial HS) and freshmen Danny Anderson (Boone) and Carl Peterson (Tucson, Ariz., Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) all were first time honorees.

Morgan Ernst (Pella), who also graduated in May, received the recognition for the third time. Juniors Ashley Maley (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS), Holly Vander Pol (Newton) and Paige Vannausdle (Red Oak), sophomores Cheyenne Powell (Nacogdoches, Texas) and EmmaGrace Walter (Johnston) and freshmen Lauren Kriegel (Pella) and Samantha Thompson (Knoxville).
