Central relay unit advances at Drake

DES MOINES — Central College’s men’s 4×100-meter relay team advanced to Saturday’s finals to highlight a cool, blustery day at the Drake Relays Friday.

The unit of Trevor Veach (senior, Grinnell), Logan Danko (junior, Centerville), Kyle Wood (senior, Newton) and Allen Scovel (senior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) took first in its heat in 41.74 seconds, the fifth-fastest time overall. The foursome’s best time this year is 41.31 seconds, also run on the Drake University track in the Jim Duncan Invitational April 14. Lincoln University (Mo.) made Friday’s best showing, winning its heat in 40.59 seconds. The final is set for 4:37 p.m. Saturday.

Danko, Wood and Scovel were joined by Mitch Wagoner (sophomore, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) in the 4×200-meter relay. Wagoner ran the lead leg as the Dutch placed third in their heat in 1:26.55.

Central was 12th overall in the 4×800-meter relay. Alex Edwards (freshman, Knoxville), Austin O’Brien (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS), Ben Schornack (junior, Urbandale) and L.J. Lipscomb (freshman, Johnston) finished in 7:47.69.

The Dutch were third in their heat of the 4×400-meter relay. Wood, Veach, Mason Zimmerman (freshman, Urbandale) and Scovel finished in 3:15.91.

In Central’s lone women’s relay, the Dutch didn’t fare as well, failing to finish the 4×400-meters.

The remainder of Central’s men’s and women’s squads were competing at the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College Friday evening.
