Central concludes season with top-25 track and field finish
LA CROSSE, WIS.—The Central College men’s track and field squad concluded their 2013 campaign Saturday at the NCAA Division III outdoor championship meet with their sixth top-25 finish in seven years.
Sophomore Eli Horton (Runnels, Southeast Polk HS) was the lone Dutch competitor on the day, crossing the line 15th in the 5,000-meter run in 14 minutes, 47.3 seconds.
Central earned 10 points over the three-day meet and finished in a tie for 22nd place in the team standings.
“I’m proud of how everyone competed this weekend,” said coach Joe Dunham. “We had some good things happen and some disappointments, but overall it was a great meet.”
Two seniors concluded their collegiate careers over the weekend. Josh Fleming (Caseyville, Ill., Collinsville HS) was a three-time all-Iowa Conference honoree for the Dutch and a league champion in the discus throw. Felicia Coleman (Houston, Texas, J. Frank Dobie HS) was a three-time all-American, five-time conference champion, and leaves the program with her name on the Central record boards nine times.
“We’re going to miss our seniors,” said Dunham. “They have been big point-scorers, but more importantly, great people and great leaders for our program.”
