Central Baseball coaching staff adds Carey

PELLA—After spending the 2019 Central College baseball season as a member of the pitching staff, Adam Carey will now oversee that group as a new assistant coach for the 2020 season.

Carey is a 2019 graduate of Central College and five-year member of the baseball program having taken a medical redshirt in 2018. He earned three varsity letters and was a team captain in 2019.

“I couldn’t be more excited to have him on board,” coach Matt Schirm said. “He knows our system and how we do things. He’ll add to that and enhance it as well. He’s a young coach and has an intense desire to be a college baseball coach.

Appearing in 21 career games, Carey had a record of 5-5 with a 5.37 ERA. In his final season, he went 4-2 in 12 games. He pitched 38.1 innings predominantly in relief, striking out 22.

“Adam has been kind of a player-coach the last few years because of the respect the team had for him. He’ll work with the pitchers predominantly, which excites me because it will free me up to be with the position players more often and oversee everything.”

Carey is currently spending his summer as the pitching coach for the Rockford Rivets in the Northwoods League, a highly competitive summer wooden bat league for collegiate players.

“It’ll be a great experience for him,” Schirm said. “He’ll be able to bring a lot of what he learns back to our coaching staff and our team.”
