Carol Myers, 76, of Sigourney died Monday, August 14, 2017, surrounded by her family at her home in Sigourney. She was born August 1, 1941, in Monroe County the daughter of Tony and Nellie Mae Mattix VanHelten.

Early on Carol worked as a waitress at various restaurants. She was united in marriage to Frank Myers. To this union six children were born Marla, Stacy, Justin, James, Bronson, and Curtis.

Carol was the medical caregiver to her husband Frank. Due to a medical condition Frank was put on kidney dialysis. Carol and Frank were one of the first couples in the state to help advance “at-home” kidney dialysis. Carol has been actively involved with the Kidney Foundation since her work with dialysis. Frank and Carol later divorced.

In addition to working as a waitress, Carol worked in housekeeping at the University of Iowa Hospital. From 2000 to 2003 she owned and operated Tweetie’s Nest and Feeder in Delta. Last, she worked in the offices of Iowa Department of Human Services and Crisis Intervention in Oskaloosa.

Carol enjoyed going to the figure eight races, being outdoors, and playing pepper and Farkle. She also enjoyed doing crafts: painting, crocheting, coloring, and putting puzzles together.

Carol was a very talented cook and baker, she will be remembered for her cinnamon rolls. She delighted in having her family around, she looked forward to preparing Sunday dinner for them every week. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Elks, Tweetie’s Angels, and the American Kidney Foundation.

She is survived by her five children: Bronson (& Angie) Myers of Sigourney, Marla Myers of Oskaloosa, James (& Patricia) Myers of Sigourney, Stacy (& Matt) Sabin of Sigourney, and Curt (& Mary) Myers of Sigourney; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; a sister, Janice VanHelten of Osage Beach, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, Frank Myers; a son, Justin Myers; a grandson, Dakota Myers; and two brothers, Buck VanHelten and Leroy VanHelten.

As was Carol’s wish her body has been cremated and no services are planned. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
