Carl Watts Brain, 87, of rural Hedrick died Monday, September 30, 2019, at his home south of Hedrick. He was born February 4, 1932, in Moravia, Iowa, the son of Earl and Ruth Watts Brain.

Carl graduated from Hedrick High School with the class of 1950. Following graduation, he continued working with his family running the Hedrick Elevator, farming, and trucking.

On May 7, 1954, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Eckley. To this union five sons were born, Don, Wayne, David, Gregory, and Lyle.

In the early 1990’s, he shifted his focus from driving truck, to farming and running the elevator. Carl was looking forward to harvest this fall and managing the tasks his boys still needed “help” with around the farm.

Carl was a member of the Hedrick-Martinsburg United Methodist Church. He was a 50 plus year member of the Free Masons. He started his journey in the Masons by joining the Garfield 485 in Hedrick, then was a member of Martinsburg 106 and currently the Justice Lodge 230 in Ollie.

Carl enjoyed being the Grand Marshall of the 2019 Hedrick BBQ Days. He was an avid golfer and looked forward to trips to Homestead, Florida to visit his brother Dean to golf and fish. He also enjoyed working on puzzles. It was not uncommon to see Carl driving around rural Keokuk and Wapello County in his pickup, he enjoyed driving the countryside and checking the crops and watching the wildlife. He delighted in spending time with his family.

His family includes his five sons: Don (& Nita) Brain of Hedrick, Wayne (& Debra) Brain of Baldwin, Georgia, David (& Trish) Brain of Bruner, Missouri, Gregory Brain of Des Moines, and Lyle (& Denise) Brain of Ottumwa; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a brother, Henry (& Clara) Brain of Fort Dodge; and his special friend, Karen Smith.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy on March 7, 2006; his parents; a granddaughter, Melissa Brain; a brother, Dean Brain; and a sister, Celia Winston.
