The Oskaloosa wrestlers returned from the holiday break Thursday night hosting Newton, but it was the Cardinals who left with a 45-31 dual meet win.

Newton jumped out to a 15-0 lead winning the first three matches and took eight of the 14 matches overall, including seven wins by fall. Oskaloosa fought hard and had some bright moments, including Sophomore Leland Evans at 138 who won by fall in 45 seconds. Sophomore Wyatt Krier at 152 was impressive with a 37-second fall, and Junior Cody Gunn pulled off an electrifying finish on a throw resulting in a 3:09 fall.

Other winners for the Indians included Freshman Phillip Abrahamson by forfeit at 113, Sophomore Salvador Gonzales was dominant picking up a 7-1 decision at 120, and Junior Heavyweight Keegan Mitts-Butler won by major decision 12-4. Two other matches Osky would like to have back included Sophomore Zach Beebe at 152 and Senior Tyson Breuklander at 220. Beebe looked to be in control of his match, but got caught late in the second period and lost by fall, while Breuklander dropped a hard-fought 13-12 decision.

Oskaloosa returns to the mats Saturday when the varsity heads to a tournament in Winterset while the JV heads to Ankeny. Osky will return home on Tuesday when they host a triangular with Albia and Fairfield starting at 5:30 pm. You can hear Tuesday’s triangular in full on Osky News Live powered by Thunder Country KIIC with Jamie Brockman and Brett Sams starting at 5:15 pm.
