Burgey Dominates 1-2 Match, William Penn Falls 32-10 to Missouri Valley
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen grapplers came up short overall, losing 32-10 to #7 Missouri Valley Tuesday, but the home team did manage a great consolation prize as the match of the night was pretty one-sided in favor of the navy and gold.
#17 William Penn (2-6) won just three contests Tuesday, including claiming the highly-anticipated #1 vs. #2 showdown of Eric Burgey (So., Easton, Pa., Easton HS) and Shay Shive.
Burgey took Shive down early and often in the first period, flying out to a 6-2 lead after three minutes of action.
With the advantage well in hand, he was able to back off on the offensive end and cruise to an 8-3 victory.
Following consecutive Missouri Valley falls to open the meet, Tommy Kozak (So., Belleville, Mich., Thiel) finally got the Statesmen on the board with a 5-1 win over Dylan Ykimoff at 141 pounds.
The hosts lost the four matches after Burgey’s triumph and trailed 28-6 entering 197 pounds. While the Vikings (7-3) had the meet wrapped up, Chris Diaz (Sr., Montrose, Colo., Olathe HS) was not about to hand his match over as well. The senior scored his squad’s final points with a dominating 10-0 major decision over Taylor Di Trolio.
The heavyweight competition also went to Missouri Valley to close out the evening.
Next: The Statesmen travel to Sioux City Saturday to compete in the Briar Cliff Open. Action begins at 9 a.m.
