Bob L. Carter, 87, of Oskaloosa died Thursday, April 22, 2021, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born May 19, 1933, in Mahaska County, Iowa, the son of John Earl and Eva Opal Wood Carter.

On June 19, 1956, he was united in marriage to Patricia Joan Carter at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa. To this union four children were born, Lorraine, Michelle, Robert, and David. On April 24, 2017, Joan died in Oskaloosa after nearly 61 years of marriage.

Bob graduated from the Fremont High School with the class of 1950.

Following high school, Bob worked driving a rock truck for the county. He then joined the Army and served in the Korean war from 1953 to 1955. After returning from the Army, he worked again as a truck driver. He took a job at Iowa Power and Light which transitioned to MidAmerican Energy. He retired from Mid-West Gas in 1985. In retirement he worked at the car wash and drove cars for Carriker Ford in Oskaloosa.

Bob was a member of the American Legion and H.O.G. Bob was very inquisitive, he enjoyed researching and learning about an array of topics. Oftentimes his research would spark a desire to collect, thus his multiple collections of various antiques. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and traveling.

Bob is survived by his three children: Lorraine (& Steve) Beckham of Canyon, Texas, Michelle Lea Spinks of Cedar Rapids, and Robert Lane (& Sheli) Carter of Glidden, Iowa; twelve grandchildren: Steven Beckham, Jonathan (& Rebecca) Beckham, Thomas Spinks, Katherine Beckham, Kryston Carter, Jennifer Carter, Michael Carter, Alex Carter, Andrew Carter, Emma Beckham, Michaella Bare, and Jessica (& Kevin) Kilcoin; eleven great grandchildren; a brother, John Carter of Oskaloosa; brothers and sisters in law, Diane (& Jim) Sutton of Eddyville, Bob (& Janet) Hesler, of Danville, Iowa, and Ruth Tadlock of Filer, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Joan, Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Carter; a sister, (Carolyn) Sue Hesler; a half-sister, Winnevere (& Floyd “Chub”) Wilhite; sisters-in-law, Mary Carter and Sue Young; and a niece, Jessi Young Hopkins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 26, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Joel Sutton officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Graveside Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Sunday, April 25, 2021, after 11:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 1-3 Sunday afternoon to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Honor Guard.
