Blind volleyball had OHS students and community members raising money for a veteran to take an honor flight.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The name sounds a bit different, but the fun is real.

Oskaloosa community members and high school students squared off this week in a blind volleyball tournament held at the Oskaloosa High School.

The cost per player was $5 each, and teams had to be co-ed, with a minimum of 6 players on the team. In total, 17 teams signed up to participate.

All proceeds will go towards sponsoring a Veteran to go on an Honor Flight.

OHS student Bennett Spry said that the competition was a little tough. He said his team was having “difficulty getting our volleys going. We tried to spike it a little too much.”

Those volleys are difficult to predict because, as the name of the game implies, players are not completely aware of what the other team is doing because their vision of the opposing team is blocked by sheets.

Spry said that it’s fun to compete against his peers, but the difficulty added by not being able to see what the opposing team is doing adds to the challenge. “I like to peek through the net sometimes to see who’s on the other side.”
