BIKE CHECKUP TIME
Oskaloosa Police Dept. Press Release
Spring is here and it’s time for a two-wheel checkup before hitting the road. Take some time this month to do an inspection of every family member’s bicycle. Each bicycle should be properly sized for the rider and the rider should demonstrate their ability to control the bicycle effectively.
Check the brakes and make sure that when applied they do the job. For nighttime users check the lights to make sure they are functioning and the batteries have a full charge. Loose parts and low tire pressure can make for a dangerous ride, so be sure to tighten nuts, bolts, handlebars and seats, and be sure the tires are inflated to the proper pressure.
It’s not all about checking out the bicycle, but it’s also about checking out the rider. Do they have a helmet and does it fit correctly? Does the rider know the rules of the road? Do young riders have safety rules and are they ready to ride on the busy streets?
Taking a few moments right now to make sure your bicycles are ready for the summer fun and talking with your kids about bicycle safety will help ensure your biking season is a fun and safe one.
