Newton (Oskaloosa), Iowa | Age 70

Beverly Yahnke, 70, of Newton and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at the Accura East Care Center in Newton. She was born September 7, 1951, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Edward and Aline Angelo Crispen.

Beverly graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1969.

Following high school, she was united in marriage to James Buwalda in California. To this union two daughters were born, Shari and Lori. After some time in California, Beverly returned to Iowa and worked as a Certified Nurse’s Aide. She left the health care field for a time and worked 18 years at Rollscreen (now Pella Corporation) and Midland Metals. Last, she worked in housekeeping at the Pella Regional Hospital, retiring from there in 2011.

In 2018, she moved to Newton to be closer to her daughters. She enjoyed working in her yard and keeping it immaculate. She loved the outdoors and nature. Beverly always had full bird and squirrel feeders in her yard. She loved to bake and cook. She enjoyed the few years that she helped operate Angelo’s Italian Kitchen food stand that traveled to various festivals in southern Iowa. It was her greatest joy though to cook and bake for her family, friends and co-workers. It was always a special treat when she shared some of her cookies or her secret family Italian Sauce. She loved animals and was quick to become attached to any critter. She especially loved her rescue dog Hogan that she had for many years.

Her family includes her two daughters, Shari Guthrie (& Jamie Brockman) of Newton and Lori (& David) Henderson of Newton; four grandchildren: Jaci Guthrie, Lance “Bud” Guthrie, Elizabeth Guthrie, and Jaxon Guthrie; her mother, Aline Crispen of Oskaloosa; two sisters, Dorothy Swim and Kathy Vande Wall both of Oskaloosa; a brother, John (& Barb) Crispen of Altoona; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Linda Ross; and a nephew, David Donaldson.
