Betty L. Turner, age 84, of Denver, IA, formerly of Albia, passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2019, at Good Samaritan Society in Ottumwa, IA, surrounded by her family. Betty was born on July 16, 1935, in Albia, IA, to Russell and Doris (Van Dorin) Hindman.

Betty grew up and attended school in Albia.

On July 2, 1952, she married John Turner. To this union, 2 children were born, Gary and Deborah. Betty and John shared 67 years of marriage prior to her passing.

Betty held many jobs before her retirement, including working at Smith Laundry, Trojan Door and Boat Factory where they made pontoon boats, Monroe Plastics, Trophy Glove, and DeLong’s. She also helped with a variety of chores on the farm doing anything from discing in the fields to baling hay.

Betty enjoyed crocheting, and playing different games, including shuffleboard, Bingo, and Mexican Train. She and John enjoyed being outdoors, camping, going to flea markets, and traveling. They were snowbirds, spending many winters in Buckeye, AZ, but also enjoyed traveling to Arkansas and many other places. She was generous with her time and enjoyed volunteering at the Visitor Center at Saylorville Lake. Above all, Betty cherished spending time with her family and friends.

Betty is survived by her husband, John Turner of Denver, IA; a son, Gary (& Sandy Simmons) Turner of Des Moines, IA; a daughter, Deborah (& Harlan) Arians of Denver, IA; 4 grandchildren: Scott (& Leslie) Wilson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Corey (& Shannon) Arians of Denver, IA, Joshua (& Marge) Arians of Brier, WA, and Tanya (& Craig) Denato of Ottumwa, IA; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren, and 1 on the way; 3 siblings: Larry (& Donna) Hindman of Albia, Shirley (& Gary) Repp of Norfolk, NE, and Charles (& Betty) Hindman of Albia; a sister-in-law, Sarah Hindman of NE; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Doris Hindman; a brother, Jack Hindman; a sister, Mary Godfrey; and a brother-in-law, George Godfrey.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2019, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Betty’s family present from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. to greet family and friends.
Visitation will reopen at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at the Tharp Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Roger Henry officiating.
Per her wishes, Betty’s body will be cremated following the service.
A private burial will be held at Oak View Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
