Betty Joan (Synhorst) Veldhuizen, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the MHP Emergency Room in Oskaloosa. Betty was born on January 23, 1941, at Mahaska County Hospital to Anthony and Elizabeth Schimmel Synhorst.
Betty attended Pleasant Ridge Elementary School from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. She attended Pella Christian High School. Betty served at the Jr./Sr. Banquet. She led the seniors in when they graduated. Betty was on the Student Council. She graduated from Pella Christian High School in 1959.
Betty met Glen Alvin Veldhuizen when they rode in a Suburban together in high school. They married on June 24, 1960.
Betty worked at Lee’s Variety Store in Pella. She fed a lot of farmers over the years. Betty was part of the Willing Workers team at Oskaloosa Christian School and worked to make hot lunches for the students who attended the school.
While attending the Cedar Christian Reformed Church, she attended the Ladies Aid on Wednesday afternoons. Betty helped with Bible School during the summer Bible Club in Kirkville, IA, that was called Orbiters Club. When Glen and Betty transferred to the Oskaloosa Church of the Nazarene, Betty was part of the funeral dinner committee. She attended the Ladies Bible Fellowship on Tuesday Mornings. Betty helped to count ballots during church elections. She was also a Sunday School Secretary. She planned social events, made coffee, took offering and attendance each Sunday.
Betty attended exercise groups like Curves and Functional Fitness.
Betty loved spending time with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. She enjoyed spending time with friends, reading and traveling to all 50 states.
She is survived by her children, Ed (Cathy) Veldhuizen, Sheryl (Matt) Brown, grandchildren, Michael (Sanja) Veldhuizen, Heidi (Mark) Van Sickle, Nathan (Tessa) Veldhuizen, and Austin (Mackenzie) Brown, great-grandchildren Brielle Van Sickle, Jack Veldhuizen, Rylie Van Sickle, Will Veldhuizen, Leo Veldhuizen, Eisley Van Sickle and Ruby Veldhuizen.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Glen Veldhuizen; her infant sons, Mark and Michael Veldhuizen; parents, Anthony and Elizabeth Synhorst; in-laws, Frank and Helen Veldhuizen.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 3rd, from 5-7 pm at Gateway Church of the Nazarene in Oskaloosa, IA, with Betty’s family present to greet relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Friday, September 4th at 1pm at Gateway Church of the Nazarene. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery.
