Beatrice passed away Wednesday afternoon at Mahaska Health Partnership at the age of 96 years, 7 months and 30 days.

Beatrice Lucille Lanphier was born, May 31, 1916, at the home of her parents, Homer Charles and Violet Jeanette “Nettie” Myres Langfitt, in Indianapolis, Iowa. She first attended school in Indianapolis and then high school in Barnes City. Beatrice was united in marriage to Edward James Lanphier, September 10, 1936, in Lancaster, Missouri. Beatrice and Edward lived in numerous locations around Mahaska County before settling in Evans in 1962. In her early years, Beatrice worked at the Monarch Laundry doing hand ironing. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and for many years baby sat for them. She was a great cook and made the best pies and noodles; she also had a large garden and canned vegetables for many years. She enjoyed making quilts and hunting mushrooms. Beatrice loved putting puzzles together and playing games of all kinds from horseshoes to playing cards, Scrabble and Yahtzee. She attended Evans Union Church and served as secretary there for many years. Beatrice always had a smile on her face and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Beatrice was able to stay in her own home until age 92 when her health required a move to the Oskaloosa Care Center.

Beatrice’s family includes her children: Donald (Beverly) Lanphier, Ronald (Connie) Lanphier, and Kathy (Dennis) Sherman, all of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Matt (fiancée, Christine) Sherman of Oskaloosa; Bryan Sherman of Des Moines, Randy (Pam) Lanphier of Oskaloosa, Jim (Sharon) Lanphier of Oskaloosa, Leroy “Zippie” Lanphier of Oskaloosa, Jeff (Sarah) Lanphier of Oskaloosa, Brent (Krystal) Lanphier of Oskaloosa, Tyler (friend, Ana) Lanphier of Emmetsburg, IA; several great-grandchildren; sisters; Catherine (Walter) Brown of Oskaloosa and Roberta (Robert) Logan of Tucson, AZ and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband in 1972, Beatrice was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Langfitt; two sisters, Marie Holliday and Geneva Sheesley; and a grandson, Jason Lanphier.

Visitation: will begin at 11 a.m., Friday morning, February 01, 2013 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 10 a.m., Saturday morning, February 02, 2013 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma of the Good News Chapel officiating.
Interment: Bellefountain Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Bellefountain Cemetery or the Oskaloosa Care Center Activity Fund.
