Barbara Dessel, 72 of New Sharon passed away Friday morning, November 11, 2022 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Barbara Jean Dessel, the daughter of John and Lorraine (Vickerman) Johnston, was born on August 29, 1950 in Brookings, South Dakota. Following her father’s death at a young age, Barb was raised by her mom and step dad, Bob Hinrichs.

Barbara was a 1968 graduate of Brookings High School in Brookings, South Dakota.

On April 8, 1972, she was united in marriage to Ardell Dessel in Brookings, South Dakota. To this union three daughters were born, Jennifer, Sara, and Lacey.

Barb always stayed busy working and raising her daughters. Ardell and Barb lived in Brookings, South Dakota, Cherokee, Iowa, Grinnell, Iowa, and St. Joseph, Missouri before moving to New Sharon in 1999.

Barb did home day care for a short time before working at North Mahaska Schools.

Barb loved to shop and had quite the collection of shoes and jewelry. She enjoyed getting her nails done, going out for dinner, glamping and drinking coffee. Her pride and joy was her family and she rarely missed a grandchild’s activity or sporting event. Barb also loved animals and had two precious dogs, Lucy and Chico. She also volunteered at the Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa.

Barb’s legacy will be cherished by her husband of 50 years, Ardell Dessel of New Sharon; her daughters: Jennifer (& Chris) Hempel of Ankeny, Sara (& Kevin) Lamb of New Sharon and Lacey Dessel of St. Joseph, Missouri; grandchildren: Braden (& Katlyn Thomas) Lamb, Garrett Lamb, Lucas Hempel and Carson Hempel; her two great granddaughters, Aubrey Myers and Everleigh Lamb; and her brother, David (& Kathy) Johnston of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She is also survived by her step daughter, Angela (& Darin) Bruce of Aurelia, Iowa; her step grandchildren; step great grandchildren; along with many other nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and step father.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Memorial contributions in Barb’s name made be made to the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter in Oskaloosa.
