Assaud Tops WPU in Kentucky Tournament

Nicholasville, Ky.–The Statesmen men’s golf team continued its spring slate by competing in the Garn Championship hosted by Spring Arbor Monday and Tuesday.

William Penn placed 18th out of 22 teams with a three-round score of 1,015 (329-349-337) at the par-72 Keene Trace Golf Club, which yearly hosts the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship.

Campbellsville (Ky.) won the team crown at 924 (310-310-304), while Kevin Latchayya of Cambellsville led the 116-player field at two-over 218 (73-73-72).

Playing as an individual for the navy and gold, Francois Assaud (Jr., Montelimar, France, Sports Management) tied for 37th at 242 (77-86-79).

Jonathan Jarvis (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management) headlined the varsity in a tie for 70th at 254 (87-89-78), while Andon Herrera (Fr., Katy, Texas, Business Management) was next, tying for 77th at 256 (83-88-85).

Trace White (Sr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Physical Education (K-12)) posted a final score of 258 (86-82-90) to finish 82nd overall, while Austin Hafner (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management) ended up tying for 83rd at 259 (81-90-88).

Luke Galeazzi (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management) wrapped up WPU’s scoring in a tie for 88th (79-97-86–262).

“It is safe to say we learned a few lessons this week,” Head Coach Elise Warne said. “We had an incredible opportunity to play a championship golf course in an excellent field. The men were challenged in every way possible way, including with the playing conditions and with the endurance of a 54-hole tournament.”

“Francois Assaud was very impressive as an individual and really showed some toughness throughout,” Warne added. “Each player had some moments of brilliance, but the course was punishing, and small mistakes were amplified. We struggled to adjust and apply our skill. We have a lot of homework before our next competition.”

Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before traveling to Newton, Kan. to compete in the Bethany Classic. Play will be contested at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
