PELLA—Veteran Big 10 official Dave Witvoet ’70 will join fellow Central College graduate Mike Stumberg ’89 at the College Football Playoff National Championship in Atlanta Jan. 8.

Witvoet will serve as a communicator in the replay booth while Stumberg will be on the field as part of the officiating crew.

Witvoet has retired from on-field duties but is making his third bowl appearance as a communicator from the press box, and is working his 22nd bowl overall. It’s his fourth national championship game. Witvoet worked the 1995 Orange Bowl with Nebraska and Miami as side judge, the Texas-USC Rose Bowl in 2006 as referee and was an alternate official for the 2011 Fiesta Bowl title matchup between Auburn and Oregon. He was the referee in 15 of his 22 bowl games.

A three-year basketball letterwinner at Central, Witvoet is a South Holland, Illinois native and lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Stumberg is in his fourth year as a Big 10 official. His on-field title game appearance is the seventh by a Central graduate. Big 12 official Brad Van Vark ’78 has officiated three national championship games.
