Anna De Bruin, 96, a resident of Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center of Oskaloosa, IA died Friday, August 29, 2014. Anna Marie De Bruin was born, June 19, 1918, to Peter & Nellie Klein Van Gilst near Pella, IA.

Anna attended European #2 Country Grade School, north of Pella. In 1930, at age 12, the family moved to a farm near Lake Keomah and later to a farm near Wright. As a young woman, she worked at Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa as a nursing assistant for 2 ½ years. On February 16, 1940, she and Ernest W. De Bruin were united in marriage at her parent’s home in Wright. Together, they farmed three years on a place southwest of Oskaloosa and then on a place near Cedar for five years. In 1949 they bought their farm north of Oskaloosa where they lived until 1967. At that time they moved into Oskaloosa, where they enjoyed their retirement. Anna helped her husband with the farming, and after moving to Oskaloosa, she worked for many years at Jaarsma’s Bakery and later at Sybenga Photography.

Anna enjoyed life and loved cooking & baking for her family, her home was always open to friends and family. She also had many hobbies, such as plaster crafts, candle making, quilting, knitting, and crocheting.

She was an active member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, and served for many years as a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Ladies Bible Hour and Queen Esther’s Society.

In 2001, Anna moved to Fair Haven in Pella; in 2004 she moved to Maple Ridge Assisted Living in Oskaloosa and in September of 2013 she transferred to Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center also in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed the care and comfort she received from living at all three of these facilities.

Anna’s memory is honored by her children and their spouses: Wayne De Bruin of Oskaloosa, Donald (& Patricia) De Bruin of Oskaloosa, Janice (& Frank) Fronek of Tinley Park, IL; ten grandchildren and their spouses: Jerry (& Jill) De Bruin of Oskaloosa, Sandra (& Mike) Rozendaal of Sully, Doug (& Robbyn) De Bruin of Oskaloosa, Randy (& Kari) De Bruin of Oskaloosa, Pam (& Kirk) Veenstra of Oskaloosa, Steve (& Amy) De Bruin of Oskaloosa, Julie (& Jason) Wildebour of Ankeny, Tim Engbers of Palos Heights, IL, Sam (& Dianna) Fronek of Palmetto, FL and Jessica Fronek also of Palmetto, FL; 32 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Gysbert Rozenboom of Grand Rapids, MI; Marvin (& Jeanette) De Bruin of Oskaloosa; Nadine Stek of Grand Rapids, MI; and Evelyn (& Thaymer) Jonker of Oaklawn, IL.

In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, of 64 years; a son, Dwight Allen in infancy; a grandson, Jeffrey De Bruin; a son-in-law, James Engbers and a daughter-in-law, Linda De Bruin; a sister, Kay Van Veldhuizen and Anna’s twin sister, Ada Rozenboom; and two brothers: Bastian & William Van Gilst.

Funeral Services for Anna will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 2 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Rev. Dale Visser officiating.
Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton, IA.
A Family Prayer Service at 10:15 a.m. will precede the Funeral Service in the lower level of the church.
Visitation will begin on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be present from 4-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Memorials may be made to Elim Christian Services, Palos Heights, IL or Oskaloosa Christian Grade School.
