Andrew Ray Mitchell Sr., age 50, of Fremont, Iowa, passed away on September 20, 2020 at his daughter’s home in Bloomfield. He was born on June 28, 1970 the son of George “Butch” Shafer Sr. and Barb Spoon in Des Moines, Iowa.
Andrew attended East High School and later graduated from the Chariton High School with the Class of 1988.
During his younger years Andrew worked as a roadie and did construction. He later worked for Ampel Corporation in Harvey, Iowa for a time until taking a job doing construction work in Knoxville. Andrew suffered a stroke which made him unable to continue working, but he stayed busy doing odds and ends jobs for neighbors, family and friends.
Andrew enjoyed NASCAR, wrestling, fishing and watching the Denver Broncos and Iowa State Cyclones ball games. His real joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his ability to get a laugh out of anyone.
His family includes his wife, Wendy Mitchell of Des Moines; his children: Jessica “Jessie” (& Brandon) Kramer of Fremont, Megan (& Nathen) Stoddard of Bloomfield, Casey Mitchell of South Carolina, and A.J. Mitchell of Blockton, Iowa; his grandchildren: Faith Manley, Candice Manley, Trenton Kramer, Konnar Stoddard, Braxton Stoddard, Ryder Stoddard and Chloe Bakalar; his mother, Barb Van De Boe; his brothers: Shawn Van De Boe, Bryan Van De Boe, David Shafer, Floyd Shafer Sr., George Shafer, Jerry Shafer and Brian Mister; his sisters: Tammy Rhoades, Michelle Woolridge and Michelle Hoffman; his beloved service dog, Minnie Moo; and several aunts and uncles.
Andrew was preceded in death by his father, George “Butch” Shafer Sr; his brothers: Jimmy Van De Boe and George Shafer Jr.; and his grandparents, Mary & William “Bill” Spoon, and Ethel Mitchell.
As was Andrew’s wish his body has been cremated.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
