Alice E. Barnard, 97, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born October 29, 1924, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Ray and Emma (Loyd) Welton.

Alice was the salutatorian of her graduating class from Cedar Consolidated School in 1942. Following high school she worked at J.H. Wake Feed Mill in Oskaloosa.

On December 25, 1944, she was united in marriage to Jay W. Barnard in Des Moines. To this union three sons were born, Richard, Charles, and Roger.

Alice worked at the Cedar School for many years; first as a cook and later as the school secretary. When the school closed, Alice went to work at Mahaska County Credit Bureau in Oskaloosa, she retired from there in 1989.

Alice was a member of the Cedar United Methodist Church in Cedar where she served in various capacities over the years. She was especially active in the church’s food stand at the Southern Iowa Fair. She was also a member of the Cedar 545 Club. She believed in giving back to her community and was always willing to help with programs and activities within the community, especially the minor league and little league baseball programs.

Her family includes her three sons: Richard “Dick” (& Mary) Barnard of Oskaloosa, Charles “Chuck” (& Annette) Barnard of Scottsdale, Arizona; and Roger Barnard of Johnston; four grandchildren: Derek (& Melissa) Barnard, Darin Barnard, Denise (& Laura) Barnard, and Jennifer (& Christopher) Neck; five great grandchildren: Crayge (& Megan) Majors, Alexandra (& Chelsea) Barnard, Bryton Neck, Giselle Neck, and Daniel Barnard; two great great grandchildren: Elizabeth Majors and Connor Majors; one sister, Dorothy Rae Turley of Phoenix, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jay on March 19, 2005; her parents; and four sisters: Martha Jane Youngker, Evelyn Randell, Neva Shadley and Vida Reed.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Chad Lierman officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
The family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel from 9:30 until service time at 10:30 on Saturday morning to greet friends and relatives.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Cedar United Methodist Church or MHP Hospice Serenity House.
