On May 2, 2018, Alexander Nagorny of Oskaloosa was awarded the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the rank of Eagle Scout.
A member of Troop 71, chartered by the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, Nagorny is one of approximately 5 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle Scout rank, according to the National Eagle Scout Association.

An Eagle Scout candidate must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community, church, or school-related project demonstrating leadership and service to earn Eagle Scout rank. Nagorny chose to remove the invasive Autumn Olive plant along a section of the Chief Wapello Trail that runs from Ottumwa to Agency. Working with Chief Wapello Trail Committee, members of Boy Scout Troops 2, 71, and 77, as well as leaders, parents, and former Scouts, Nagorny removed the plant from along a 500 meter stretch of the trail. The removed plants were piled in a prairie and along the trail to be used as habitat for the animals. During the work day, the group also worked to widen the trail from approximately 2 feet to over 10 feet, by clearing out undergrowth and other small trees.

Alexander Nagorny served as Senior Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, and has been involved in Scouting for 8 years. Nagorny joins other outstanding American citizens who have become Eagle Scouts, among them former President Gerald R. Ford, Jr., astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, and cinematographer Steven Spielberg.

Outside of Scouting, Nagorny is a senior at Oskaloosa High School where he is ranked 3rd in his class, the Captain of the Debate Team, President of the Thespian Drama Troupe #228, senior member of the Storybook Players Group, Concertmaster of the High School Orchestra, and National Honor Society Member. Nagorny was also recognized as a Des Moines Register Academic All-State Student. He also works part-time at Subway in Oskaloosa.

Nagorny plans to attend Iowa State University, where he will major in mathematics and minor in music.
