Albert Dean Nickel, 68, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at home in Oskaloosa. He was born September 20, 1955, in Chariton, Iowa, the son of Kenenth and Marie Deemer Nickel.

Albert graduated from Knoxville High School with the class of 1973.

Following high school, he went to work for the Knoxville School System for a short time. In 1973, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He continued his service to his country by serving in the Marine Corps. Reserves, the Army Reserves, and the National Guard. He served in the military for 12 years before he was honorably discharged.

On May 19, 1983, he was united in marriage to Tina Greene in California.

Albert spent his entire working life as an over the road truck driver. He loved being on the road and had visited 49 states and Canada in his semi. He was proud of the fact that he had been to all fifty states as he spent some time in Hawaii when he was in the Marine Corps.

Albert had a knack for remembering the places he had been and how he got there. If Albert was along on a trip there was no need to get out the atlas, he could get you anywhere in the country. On top of knowing the directions, he could tell you all the good places to eat along the way. He worked the final 11 years of his career for Baumburger and Sons, retiring from there in 2007.

In retirement he did some local driving for various companies and mechanic work for friends and family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and road trips with his family and friends. He also enjoyed working on cars and watching the sprint and Nascar Races. He enjoyed having his pets around especially his dogs. Most of all he loved his family especially his grandchildren.

His family includes his wife of over 40 years, Tina Nickel of Oskaloosa; five children: Rocky Nickel of Oklahoma, Dawn Nickel of Knoxville, Kenneth (fiancée April Evans) Nickel of Oskaloosa, Gary (Elena) Nickel of Green City, Missouri, and Mary Nickel of Oskaloosa; twelve grandchildren: Rocky, Jr., Rex, Samantha, Destiny, Kaitlyn, Riley, Gary, Jr., Krystianna, Lora, Janea, Dominique, and DeVontae; two great grandchildren; three brothers: Lawrence Nickel and Gerald Nickel both of Knoxville, and Terry Moon of Oskaloosa; a sister, Tina Gardner of Des Moines; nieces and nephews: Patricia, Cindy, John, Jessica, Skylar, and Monica; and many other members of the extended family.
