Akeo picked as league’s male athlete of the week

PELLA— A 5-0 week by Central College’s 133-pound wrestler Shandon Akeo (junior, Honolulu, Hawaii, Kapolei HS) earned the junior the American Rivers Conference male athlete of the week honors.

Akeo was also the conference’s wrestler of the week. Men’s basketball guard Adam Flinn (junior, St. Louis, Mo., Lafayette HS) was selected as the men’s basketball player of the week for the second consecutive week.

Akeo was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational after going 4-0 Saturday. He won the individual title with a 14-5 major decision in the final. He also had an 18-2 technical fall victory in a dual against Augustana College Thursday night.

Central competes for the final time in 2019 with a home dual against Nebraska Wesleyan University on Thursday night at 7 p.m. inside P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

Flinn averaged 28.5 points per game in victories over Wartburg College and Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) last week. He totaled 10 assists and 11 rebounds between the two games. Against the Vikings, he nailed the go-ahead 3-pointer with 23 seconds remaining.

Central travels to Grinnell College Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. contest.
