Ag Day brings farm to students

Mahaska County Ag Day 2017

by Charlie Comfort

Oskaloosa, Iowa- Third graders of Mahaska County were recently given the opportunity to understand more about life on a farm through the Ag in the Classroom program. Nearly 280 third grade students from Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa Chisitian, North Mahaska, Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont Fremont attendance center, and Peoria Christian were given the opportunity to go to the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds recently to learn about life on the barn.

The Iowa Diversity Foundation was on hand to talk to students about soybeans. Also present was the Iowa Honey Queen, who educated the students about honey bees in Iowa. The Oskaloosa FFA also played a role in this year’s event, helping to make the day a special day for the students present.

Karen Adams, of the Ag in the Classroom program, once again led the day. She said that she visits all the third grade students in Mahaska County one time each month and educates them on agriculture and farming. The Ag day helped to wrap all of those visits up for the students and help them understand life on a farm.

“This is kind of the culmination for the year,” Adams said at the event.

Adams will visit the students one more time in May to talk about “how dirt made our lunch” and reviews the Ag Day event with the students.
