A Sign That Summer Is Coming To An End

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The annual Sweet Corn Serenade in Downtown Oskaloosa is a family favorite year after year.

It was the 31st year for the quintessential small town celebration, and by the crowd on Thursday evening, there is little chance this celebration of summer will come to an end soon.

Oskaloosa Main Street is the group behind the scenes making the event happen. There was food, crafts and shopping on the square all day long.

There was fun for the kids courtesy of Community 1st, Farm Bureau, Gateway Nazarene, Tom Terrific.

The Mahaska County Cattlemen grilled the burgers, while the Oskaloosa Rotary donated their time to roasting up the corn and serving it to the seemingly never-ending line.

A pie baking contest took place in the bandstand, while the Marshall County Hangmen played, sponsored by Bank Iowa.

The Vanguard Cadets from Santa Clara, California performed before the historic Oskaloosa Municipal Band capped off the night beginning at 8 pm.

Oskaloosa Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt spoke about Sweet Corn Serenade, and it’s importance to the community. “It is just one more piece of the fabric of the community that we have.”

“It does my heart so good to see the community turn out for this,” added Krutzfeldt. “It’s just that sense of community that all of our friends are here at the same time. So, no matter where you turn, no matter how far you walk, you’re seeing somebody you know. It’s just a great way to spend the time and really feel good about the community.”

For us at Oskaloosa News, Sweet Corn Serenade is the way we mark the years. Our first story that we covered in 2010 was Sweet Corn Serenade. We’ve enjoyed the past eight years, and look forward to what the future will hold for Oskaloosa News.

Ginger and I still have Oskaloosa News for sale, and it will more than likely be a long process to find the next owners who want to share our community with the world. Until that day, Ginger and I will continue to enjoy sharing them with you all.
