Mary Jane Hunt, 93, of Des Moines and formerly of Oskaloosa died Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at the Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Mary was born March 19, 1926, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Marie Vahle Masters.

Mary graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1944.

On June 12, 1944, Mary was united in marriage to Arlo Hunt at Knoxville, Iowa.

Mary started working at Woolworth Department Store in Oskaloosa. She spent her career at Woolworth and the majority of her time was dedicated to traveling around and opening new stores.

Mary enjoyed gardening and flowers. She always looked forward to having family and friends over for a meal.

Her family includes her two sisters, Geraldine (& Ernest) Ellis of West Des Moines and Betty Mayhugh of Mesa, Arizona; ten, nieces and nephews; and her long-time special friend, Dale Veldhuizen.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo; her parents; and two sisters, Loretta VanNordstrand and Janet Edwards.

Graveside funeral services and burial will be held Monday, April 1, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with Reverend Bruce Wittern officiating.
A procession will form at 9:40 on Monday morning for those wishing to attend the graveside service. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
