Curta named to Watch List

GRINNELL, Iowa – Record-breaking Grinnell College basketball player Vinny Curta ’19 has been named to the Bevo Francis Award watch list.
The award, presented by Small College Basketball, goes to the top player in NCAA Divisions II and II, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA. It is named after Bevo Francis, who attended Rio Grande College in Ohio from 1952-54. He became the most popular basketball player in the world, leading the Redmen to a 39-0 record in his first year while averaging 50.1 points per game. Against Ashland College (Ky.), Francis scored 116 points which included 55 points in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Curta currently leads NCAA Division III in free throws made and attempted with 128 and 162, respectively. He is fourth in scoring at 26.2 points per game and holds Midwest Conference records for career and season free throws made and attempted. Curta currently ranks fifth in Pioneer history in career scoring with 2,055 points.
The watch list will be narrowed from 100 players to 50 on Feb. 15, and then down to 25 on March 15. The finalists will be announced April 6 and the award winner will be named May 11 at the SCB National Awards Show in Kansas City, Mo.
