Grinnell puts 4 on All-MWC Baseball Team; Weirather is MWC South Newcomer of the Year

GRINNELL, Iowa – Four Grinnell College baseball players have been named to the All-Midwest Conference South Division Team, with one winning a special award.

Brock Weirather ’21 was named MWC South Newcomer of the Year, marking the second year in a row a Pioneer has earned that honor. He was named to the All-MWC South Team along with Sam Galanek ’18, Nathan Zaroban ’18 and Andrew Shults ’19.

Weirather was the ace of the Pioneers’ pitching staff and ranked in the league’s top 10 in innings pitched with 58 and wins with a 5-1 record. He had a 3.88 ERA in 11 appearances and struck out 36 batters.

Galanek, a catcher/designated hitter, established the Grinnell school record for career sacrifice flies with 16 and set season marks for games played (38), at bats (151) and fielding percentage (1.000). He ranked in the league’s top 10 in batting average (.371), slugging percentage (.570), hits (56), RBIs (50), doubles (15), homers (5) and sacrifice flies (4).

Zaroban, a right fielder, set a school record for games played (38). He ranked among the league leaders in batting average (.389), slugging percentage (.656), on-base percentage (.481), runs (42), hits (51), doubles (13), homers (6), hit by pitch (11) and sacrifice hits (5).

Shults, an All-MWC and All-Region selection last year, set Grinnell records for games played with 38, stolen bases with 27 and fielding percentage at 1.000. The outfielder ranked among the MWC leaders in stolen bases, on-base percentage (.497), runs (45), hits (51), batting average (.370), walks (26), hit by pitch (11).

Other award winners from the MWC South were Illinois College’s Dylan Jones (Pitcher of the Year), along with Monmouth College’s Grant Myers (Position Player of the Year) and Alan Betourne (Coach of the Year).
