Grinnell’s Vinny Curta repeats as All-MWC First-Team selection
GRINNELL, Iowa – For the second year in a row, Grinnell College men’s basketball standout Vinny Curta ’19 has been named to the All-Midwest Conference First Team.
Curta, a 6-5 guard from Oak Lawn, Ill. (Dwight D. Eisenhower), leads all of NCAA – regardless of division – in scoring with 32.7 points per game. In the season finale at Illinois College, Curta broke NCAA Division III records for free throws made and attempted in a season with 252 and 329.
He is the first Grinnell player to earn repeat first-team All-MWC honors since Griffin Lentsch did so in 2012 and 2013.
Curta, a D3hoops.com All-Central Region selection last year, finished the season ranked in the Pioneers’ top 10 in three season categories besides the free throws mark. He is second in points with 785, fourth in field goals made with 243 and sixth in scoring average. He also ranks among the top 10 all-time in the MWC in those categories.
Additionally, Curta is ranked in four career categories at Grinnell with a season yet to play – free throws attempted (second with 677, third in the MWC), free throws made (third with 512, fifth in the MWC), assists (eighth with 320) and points (ninth with 1,662).
Monmouth College claimed two of the individual MWC honors, with Will Jones being tabbed Player of the Year and Todd Skrivseth the Coach of the Year. Tyler Semenas of Ripon College was named MWC Newcomer of the Year and Illinois College claimed the Sportsmanship Award.
