PELLA, IOWA— Saturday had one theme throughout the game. Rebound.

Central senior forward Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) tied a school record with 22 rebounds in a 73-55 victory over the University of Dubuque.

“I’m very proud of the way we played tonight,” said coach Joe Steinkamp. “Jackie did a great job fighting for rebounds and she showed a ton of energy.”

Kriegel also added eight points and two assists.

The Dutch had been on a two-game losing streak but bounced back to improve their record to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Iowa Conference play.

Senior guard Emily Dine (Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) had 19 points, including 5-of-11 from beyond the arc and four assists.

“Emily did a nice job shooting the ball tonight,” said Steinkamp. “I thought she did a nice job early of hitting shots and then using what the defense gave her.”

Sophomore forward Kendall Brown (Moravia) had 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks and senior guard Jessica Helton (Nevada) had 11 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Central outshot Dubuque (1-5 overall, 0-2 conference) 37.9 percent to 33.9 and the Dutch dominated the rebound battle 50-34.

“We played solid defense most of the night,” said Steinkamp. “I thought Alison Malaby (Mechanicsville, North Cedar HS) and Jessica Helton did a great job guarding their best player, Abbey Meyer. She was averaging 17 points per game and they held her to 3-of-14 shooting.”

Central won the second and third quarters, 21-12 and 24-18 respectively.

“We did a nice job finishing the first half and starting the second half,” said Steinkamp.

The Dutch continue league play Wednesday with a women’s-men’s doubleheader in Pella at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium against Nebraska Wesleyan. The Prairie Wolves enter the contest at 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference after a 108-73 loss to Simpson College Saturday in Lincoln.
