Turnovers costly for Dutch women’s basketball team
MANKATON, MINN. — Turnovers led to the demise of the Central College women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon, succumbing 79-72 to Bethany Lutheran University.
Central (1-1) had 19 turnovers and gave up 19 points off those turnovers.
“Tough game on the road tonight,” said coach Joe Steinkamp. “I thought we played extremely hard but just didn’t play well enough to win on the road. Usually when you are plus-8 on the boards and hold your opponent to under 40 percent from the field you have a chance to win but we had too many turnovers and defensive miscues to get the win.”
Senior forward Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) poured in a career high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
“Jackie Kriegel had a great game offensively, defensively and on the glass,” said Steinkamp. “Her energy and intensity almost brought us back.”
Senior guard Emily Dine (Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) had 12 points and three assists and sophomore forward Kendall Brown (Moravia) had her first statistical double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Dutch return to the court for a road game Wednesday with a matchup Westminster University (Mo.) at a newly scheduled 3 p.m. in Fulton, Mo.
