Glenn ‘Joe’ Dale Barnard, 89, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at his home in Lake Suzy, Florida. He was born September 28, 1928, the son of Wilbur and Ruth (Moore) Barnard in Cedar, Iowa.

Joe attended Cedar School graduating in 1946. He married Thelma Mae Moody in January 1951. Thelma passed away in April 1958. He married Deanna Bekaert in December 1966 and later divorced. Joe then married Virginia ‘Gini’ Lucas.

Joe was proud to serve his country in the US Army as Corporal, Company 1, 86th Infantry, First Platoon. He served active duty in Korea (1951 – 1952) as a gunner.

Joe enjoyed a very successful career with Dekalb Seed Corn Company – beginning in Grinnell, Iowa in 1952, transferring to Chatham, Ontario Canada in 1966 and retiring in 1988 to Florida.

Joe was a member of the Corn Trade Seed Association for several years during his career with Dekalb. Joe was a successful student and instructor of the Dale Carnegie course. As an active supporter of the community, Joe was a member of the local Chatham Lion’s Club and local Elks Club in Florida.

Joe was an avid sports fan, especially basketball and baseball. He enjoyed travelIng over the years and completed countless home renovations and landscaping projects. Above all, what mattered most and brought him the most joy were family gatherings at his home and cottage. He was loved, admired, respected, and will be dearly missed by so many colleagues, friends, and family.

Joe is survived by his wife, Virginia ‘Gini’ (Lucas) Barnard of Lake Suzy, Florida; two sisters; Patricia (Barnard) DeWitt of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Bonnie (Barnard) Smith of Boise, Idaho; sisters-in-law; Alice Barnard and Doris Barnard of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Elaine Barnard of Ankeny, Iowa. There are numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.

Joe was a loving father and grandfather adored by his children and grandchildren – daughters, Linda Jolene (Barnard) Neely and Vimy Lynne (Barnard) (& Paul) Roberts; a son, Craig Alan (& Germaine) Barnard; grandchildren; Amy Jolene (Neely) (& Mike) Madter, Erin Michelle Neely, Jordan Matthew Barnard, Maeve Catherine Jane Roberts, all of Ontario, Canada; a great-granddaughter, Addison Jolene Madter of Ontario Canada. Stepchildren and grandchildren: daughter, Robin (Stanek) (& Mike) Ricketts; son, Kimm (& Sandy) Stanek; grandchildren: Kyle (Ricketts)(& Will) Freedman, Mickey Ricketts, and Amber Stanek.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Mae (Moody) Barnard; a son, Rodney Allen Barnard; his parents, Wilbur and Ruth Joy Barnard; a sister, Ruth (Barnard) Lane, four brothers: Jay Barnard, Charles ‘Rex’ Barnard, Bill Barnard, and Jack Barnard; a sister-in-law, Lucille Barnard; four brothers-in-law: Gerald Lane, John Sheppard, Kenneth DeWitt, and Warren Smith: and a stepdaughter, Sandie Christie.

Funeral services will be held at the Bates Funeral Home in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 10:30 a.m.
Visitation on Thursday, November 9, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
