Patricia Hussey Fisher to receive William Penn University’s Ed Thomas Award

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – William Penn University is pleased to announce this year’s 2017 Ed Thomas Award recipient, Patricia Hussey Fisher (’73). The Ed Thomas award is given to candidates who are successful in coaching young students in the world of athletics and those who have a special gift of shaping and changing the lives of those they encounter. The late and great Ed Thomas had a great impact on his athletes. He passionately believed that his job as a coach was not to prepare kids to be college athletes, but to make their involvement in football or other sports a learning experience.

After graduating from William Penn in 1973, Hussey Fisher spent time as the Recreation and Facilities Use Coordinator for the Storm Lake School District, helping organize and plan youth activities and sports for more than 20 years, including Storm Lake’s Challenger Games for special needs children. She then moved on to become a member of the Storm Lake School District Foundation and helped found a program called Project ENGAGE, which helped pay for children’s participation fees and athletic equipment for sports. Her efforts to create a welcoming experiencing for children and adults in the Storm Lake area are exemplary and make her the perfect candidate for the Ed Thomas award.

William Penn will posthumously honor Hussey Fisher at the 2017 Alumni Recognition Banquet held during homecoming week where she will be inducted into William Penn’s Hall of Fame. Her family will be present to receive the award on her behalf on Friday, September 29, in the Musco Technology Center (MTC). Registration begins at 5:30 p.m., with the ceremony starting at 6 p.m.
