PELLA— Holding their opponents from Monmouth College to just three shot attempts, the Central College women’s soccer team picked up a 3-0 win Sunday afternoon.

Only needing to make one save, freshman goalkeeper Taylor Golt (Crystal Lake, Ill., Prairie Ridge HS) went the distance, earning her first shutout and second win. In front of Golt, senior defenders Kayla Dowell (Cedar Falls), Jackie Sunderman (Pella) and Rachel Verhun (Ann Arbor, Mich,. Pioneer HS) prevented the freshman from needing to make any additional stops.

“Taylor really manages the game well,” Kobylinski said. “The seniors in front of her were really dominant today.”

The Scots (1-1) committed a foul in the box on a Dutch (2-0) corner kick just past the 10-minute mark in the first half. Burying the ensuing penalty kick, Kallie Holte (senior, Kirksville, Mo.) gave Central a 1-0 lead.

“We’ll take PK’s when we get them,” Kobylinski said. “Kallie thrives on that kind of pressure and I’m glad she stepped as a senior.”

The forward combination of Elise Askelsen (sophomore, 5-9, Indianola) and Erin Manion (sophomore, 6-0, Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) had several prime scoring opportunities wiped out with offsides calls. The duo finally successfully connected six minutes into the second half when Askelsen finished off of a Manion assist to make it 2-0.

“A few of those could have been breakaways and potential goals,” Kobylnski said. “This is the most fluid and physical we’ve seen them up top together. They’re going to be dangerous.”

Cate Christopherson (freshman, Omaha, Neb, North HS) scored her first collegiate goal amidst a chaotic scene in front of the net off another Dutch corner kick to extend the lead to 3-0. Manion added her second assist of the day and Lauren Vahlkamp (junior, Quincy, Ill., Notre Dame HS) also was credited with one for the corner.

“Cate’s playing well as a freshman,” Kobylinski said. “She ended up scoring that goal off her face. Goals comes in many different ways so we’ll take anything.”

A roadtrip to Grinnell College awaits the Dutch on Wednesday. Central has beaten the Pioneers the last five meetings after losing the first eight contests between the two teams. The last Grinnell victory was in 2010. The game time is set for 5 p.m. in Grinnell.
