Seniors lead Central women’s track team in classroom

PELLA— The entire Central College women’s track and field team was honored for its performance in the classroom, but three May graduates served as the catalyst by earning spots on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team.

In order to qualify for the team award, the GPA of the team’s entire roster must combine to equal 3.10. The Dutch reached a 3.35 GPA as a team.

Representing the class of 2017, Emma Drees (Waukee), Morgan Koenigs (Mapleton, MVAO HS) and Lorell Stuht (Loveland, Colo.) were the three Central athletes to land the individual honor. Drees and Koenigs previously were cited in 2015 while it’s Stuht first time on the team.

To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must post a 3.3 or better combined GPA and compete in an NCAA Division III indoor or outdoor championship or finish the regular season ranked in the top 35 in the nation in an individual event.

The runner-up at the Iowa Conference outdoor championships, Drees was 28th on the national qualifying list in the heptathlon with 4,267 points. She finished her double major of accounting and business management with a 3.68 GPA.

Right behind her was Koenigs who finished 32nd on the heptathlon’s national qualifying list with 4,196 points. She finished third at the conference meet and graduated with a 3.91 GPA in elementary education.

An indoor All-American in 2016, Stuht finished 14th in the hammer throw in 2017 at the national indoor meet. She was an all-conference weight thrower outdoors while earning a final GPA of 3.35 as an exercise science major.

Central’s women’s track and field program has had 37 athletes earn USTFCCCA all-academic distinction 64 times.
