Osky Girls Soccer Win On Senior Night

The girls’ soccer team was in action last night against Indianola for their last regular season home game. It would also be Senior Night as the team was able to recognize 5 amazing Seniors. Those Seniors were Ashley Brockman, Claire Fiechtner, Kamryn Beers, Lainey Hart and Leah VanMaanen.

For the 2nd night in a row the girls would face a strong wind and a hot evening as they looked to notch another Little Hawkeye Conference win. The girls would have to play going into the strong South wind. It took a while to shake off the tiredness from the night before, but the Indians would strike first with a finish from Aleeya Cheney in the 16th minute. Unfortunately, the visitors would tie the game up 7 minutes later. Leah VanMaanen would give the Indians the lead at 2-1 at the 26th minute mark. The Indians would hold off a late surge from Indianola to go into half leading 2-1.

With the wind at their back, the Indians would find more scoring opportunities, but struggled to finish any of them and quick break away from Indianola would tie the game up half way through the 2nd half. The Indians would dig down deep and Emily Lunsford would put away a rebound off the keeper in the 65th minute to take the lead 3-2. It was a battle towards the end, but the girls found enough energy to keep Indianola off the board and to earn the Senior Night victory.

“We knew this game was going to be tough just for the fact that we were playing less than 24 hours before in a very hot, tough, physical game. There were times you could see the girls were tired, but they found a way to win and this is something that we struggled with last season. We are learning how to dig deep and win the close games. Hopefully this is something we can build upon as we move closer to regionals and a run at state. We are so proud of how the girls are going out and giving it their all with many of them playing a full 80 minutes and turning around and doing it again the next day.”

“We want to thank the huge crowd we had cheering us on and helping us celebrate our Seniors. They are an amazing group of girls and we will miss them not only for their ability as players, but who they are as people!”

The girls will finish off their 3 game week tomorrow as they travel to Ottumwa for a rain make-up game. Varsity is at 5:30 with JV to follow.
