(Patricia) Joan Carter, 80, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, April 24, 2017, at Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born Thursday, May 28, 1936, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of George William and Ita Marvina Russell Young.

Joan graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1954. On June 19, 1956, Joan was united in marriage to Bob Carter at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa.

Joan worked at the Mahaska movie theater in Oskaloosa as well as Kresge’s 5 & 10, Continental Overall Factory and McCurdy’s Seed. While her children were young she stayed home to raise them.

Joan collected Snoopy figurines, Precious Moments, antiques and movies. She enjoyed riding motorcycles and playing cards. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Red Hat Hotties and P.E.O. Chapter DG.

Joan is survived by her husband of over 60 year, Bob Carter of Oskaloosa; two daughters: Lorraine Kay (& Steve) Beckham of Canyon, Texas and Michelle Lea Spinks of Cedar Rapids; two sons: Robert Lane (& Sheli) Carter and David Grant (& Renee) Carter both of Glidden, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; two sisters: Diane (& Jim) Sutton of Eddyville and Susan Young of Berryville, Arkansas; two brothers-in-law: John Carter of Oskaloosa and Bob Hesler of Danville, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Tadlock of Filer, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, George Young; a brother-in-law, Kenny Warren; three sisters-in-law: Sue Hesler, Winnevere (Floyd “Chub”) Wilhite, and Mary Carter; and a niece, Jessi Young Hopkins.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa on Friday, April 28, 2017, at 10:30 A.M. with Reverend John Spiegel officiating.
Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will begin Thursday, April 27, 2017, after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the family present at the funeral chapel Thursday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
The Rosary will be recited Thursday at 7 P.M. at the Bates Funeral Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
