WOMEN LANDOWNERS IN OR NEAR MAHASKA COUNTY ARE INVITED TO A FREE CONSERVATION RESERVE PROGRAM (CRP) MEETING IN OSKALOOSA TUESDAY, APRIL 11, 2017

AMES, IA – Women who own or manage farmland in Mahaska and surrounding counties are invited to participate in a free discussion focused on CRP Tuesday, April 11th at the Extension and Outreach Center, 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa. The program, sponsored by Women, Food and Agriculture Network and the Taylor County Water Quality Initiative Program is called Women Caring for the LandSM.

The morning will start with registration, coffee and resource sharing at 8:30 a.m., and the meeting will begin promptly at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided, and during an afternoon field trip in the Muchakinock Creek Watershed, participants will tour the surrounding countryside to view CRP plantings and other stewardship practices. The meeting will end with dessert and wrap-up at the Extension office by 3 p.m.

Maintaining healthy soil is the key to productivity and environmental health for our farmland. Women landowners who attend this meeting will learn to improve and protect their soils and water through the use of targeted CRP practices. We will use special maps to show how protecting your soil can be profitable and we’ll introduce how variable rate technology can play a role. Local agency staff will help you understand the CRP program and the application process.

Nearly half of the farmland in Iowa is currently owned or co- by women. Women Caring for the LandSM offers a peer-to-peer, informal discussion format to allow women landowners to talk about their individual farm management goals, facilitated by women conservationists. This response from one recent attendee is typical of our landowners’ experiences: “This has given me some understanding of what my husband talks about. I came to this meeting with no understanding – I am excited about the projects possible to protect the soil and feel this meeting has helped me in beginning to learn about farming.”

RSVP by 4p.m., Friday, April 7th to Wendi at (641) 673-3476, wendi.denham@ia.usda.gov. For more information about this program, visit www.womencaringfortheland.org or call Carol at 641-430-2540.

This meeting is made possible with funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency / Commodity Credit Corporation, under Federal Award Identification No. CCC-DAFP-6-058. If you need physical accommodations, please let Wendi know when registering.
