Iowa State Patrol To Visit Oskaloosa To Celebrate 82nd Birthday

Iowa State Patrol Squad Car

A one day commemorative tour celebrating the 82nd birthday of the Iowa Highway Safety Patrol (now the Iowa State Patrol) will be held May 7th, 2017. The Iowa Automotive Heritage Foundation (sponsor of the Des Moines Concours d’Elegance), the Iowa State Patrol and Keep Iowa Beautiful are the key organizers of the event. The tour will be led by the recently restored 1935 Ford Tudor Sedan State Patrol car along with two other vintage patrol vehicles.

The tour will leave from the Ola Babcock Miller building north of the State Capitol and end in Washington, Iowa with a refreshment stop on the square in Oskaloosa. Secretary of State Miller became the “mother” of the ISP. She was born and is buried in Washington, Iowa. The public is invited to participate in the event by joining the tour with their vehicle and / or by driving a vintage vehicle. A full schedule and application form is attached. The deadline for applicantions is April 7th.

The objective of the event is to increase awareness of the heritage of the Iowa State Patrol (ISP) and the woman that led the effort in establishing the Patrol in 1935 – Secretary of State Ola Babcock Miller. The ISP supports the litter hotline program of Keep Iowa Beautiful. The litter hotline 1-888-NOLITTR (888-665-4887) provides an opportunity for individuals that see litter thrown from a vehicle to phone in and report the incident. The Patrol authenticates the license plate with the vehicle description. If it is a valid call the ISP sends out a letter indicating that litter was seen thrown from the licensed vehicle and offers suggestions for not littering.
