Larry “Pete” McVay, 85 of Oskaloosa and formerly of Hedrick passed away, Thursday, March 23, 2017, at the Keota Health Care Center in Keota. Larry Eugene McVay, the son of Earl Emerson and Leona Marie (Smithart) McVay, was born August 12, 1931, in Hedrick, Iowa.

Pete graduated in 1948 from Hedrick High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant the following two years. Pete played football at Iowa Wesleyan, and it was there he met Mary K. Black, the love-of-his-life. They were united in marriage in Des Moines, September 2, 1951.

They first made their home in Trenton, Missouri where Pete worked as a telephone lineman. Pete and Mary lived in Ottumwa, Pella, and Trenton, Missouri before settling in Pete’s hometown of Hedrick in 1962. There, Pete was offered the job of running the local oil station. A few years later, Pete took a job as an over-the-road semi driver. He drove many years for DRS Transport in Oskaloosa and CRST in Cedar Rapids. He retired from trucking in 1994.

Pete was a member of the Hedrick United Methodist Church and later the Fremont United Methodist Church. As a young man, he enjoyed attending stock car races and all his children’s and extended family’s sporting events. Later in life, he became an avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball and football fan.

Pete’s family includes his wife of 65 years, Mary of Sigourney; their three children and spouses: Gary (& Sarah) McVay of Troy, Montana, Connie (& Andrew) Hansen of Des Moines, and Rhonda (& Mike) Foubert of Delta; seven grandchildren: Alyssa (& Monty Worden) McVay, Michael (& Tawny) McVay, Elizabeth Morkeberg, Ashley South, Hillary (& Tom) Kinsinger, Chris Hansen and Jessica Foubert; and four great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Evangeline Kinsinger and Elly and Ayden Stiller.

In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Howard Brown.

Memorial services for Pete will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Bob Voels of the Fremont United Methodist Church officiating.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday; the family will be present from 1-3 p.m.
As was his wish, his body had been cremated, and burial of his ashes will be in Van Orsdall Cemetery near Ollie, Iowa at a later time.
Memorial may be made to the Fremont United Methodist Church.
